Pastor Julie Kelly (she/her) serves the congregation of Hope Lutheran Church in Riverside, California. She is a graduate of Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas (Bachelor of General Studies in Organizational Leadership and Human Services) and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota (Master of Divinity). She personally identifies as a Reconciling Works pastor and is thrilled to be part of a congregation that has a history of welcoming and affirming all people.
She enjoys writing and often seeks to understand scripture from the “underside.” This means that she looks at it and wonders what is being missed or is rarely spoken/preached about. She follows in the footsteps of her Lord, Jesus, and is subversive, outspoken, radically loving, and welcoming of all people and not afraid to speak truth in hard and (sometimes) unyielding places. She also loves a little affirmation now and then (who doesn’t?)
Her congregation has gone to great lengths to learn to lean into change and new ideas and work in the world as a church that serves the whole community, not just those inside their formal worship walls. It is her desire and hope to walk with them in these changes and exploration of the word in the world.
All of her sermon manuscripts will be posted here, but be forewarned, they are never exactly what she preaches- just a close reading. To hear her live sermons, join us in worship at 2882 Arlington Ave., Riverside, CA on Sundays at 9 am.
